Google is testing Android 16 and Samsung not even released Android 15 (One UI 7)

Google is testing Android 16 for the entire Android ecosystem, meanwhile, Samsung has not even released Android 15 for its existing devices. The Korean phone maker has based One UI 7 on Android 15 with many new features as well as UI upgrades. This new One UI version is quite late compared to the previous ones, which could be related to Samsung’s transition to generative AI technologies. To set things straight, let’s take a look at the Android releases. In February 2023, Google released the first developer preview for Android 14. After five months of testing, the company announced the final build in October. That year, Samsung opened the One UI 6 beta program for the S23 series in August, followed by a stable release for top models in late 2023. Moving on, the first Android 15 developer preview was announced in February, and the final build debuted in October 2024. Apart from previous years, 2024 was quite frustrating for Galaxy smartphone owners in the case of One UI 7. The first beta for this OS was released in December, a three-month delay as compared to the One UI 6 beta a year before. Interestingly, Google did something unusual last year, it not only wrapped up the Android 15 stable rollout but also rolled out the Android 16 developer beta in November. This is way faster than Samsung, which has not even released a stable software update as of January 2025. More to add, this month, Android 16 is officially beta testing on Pixel devices. That’s way too fast for Android, while Galaxy users are still waiting for the first glimpse at Android 15-based One UI 7. It is expected that Samsung took some time to integrate generative AI features with One UI 7 to showcase the Galaxy S25 series. Still, the company has a big lineup of devices to cover with the latest software update and it is yet to enter the rollout mode. A previous report indicates that Samsung could upgrade Android 15 for the Galaxy S24 series starting in February but we’ll have to wait for an official confirmation.
